Fitness, Wellness, Physical Therapy
There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to the difference between a chiropractor and a physical therapist. It isn’t uncommon for people suffering pain to wonder about whom to see about getting relief.
Both of these professionals work with patients who are suffering from both acute and chronic pain. However, the roles they play in the treatment and recovery of the patient are quite different and distinct.
Chiropractors
A chiropractor is a health professional that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses or injuries affecting the musculoskeletal system. These professionals help to address issues that interfere with normal body mechanics.
Chiropractors are specialists in the science of manipulation of the body. They will help to adjust bones and joints to bring the body back into alignment. They will help you improve your body’s functions. They can also take a holistic approach and provide guidance in medication, relaxation and diet for better results.
Physical therapists
Physical therapists on the other hand are health professionals that specialize in restoring function and mobility as part of your recovery from illness or injury. They work with patients to help restore mobility through physical exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles and improving the range of motion in the joints. They may also apply techniques such as hydrotherapy and message therapy to help with recovery.
Unlike chiropractors, physical therapists cannot prescribe medications.
Who should you see for pain?
This depends on the extent and nature of your injuries. It also depends on your goals on recovery from your injury or illness. You may need to see both a physical therapist and a chiropractor for the best results.
